Anything that can be hung on the wall can also stand alone on your mantel, open shelving table top, or on a ledge. Make it stand out by placing it on a stand - prop it up! Clocks, books, mirrors, plates, even your iPad can go on a stand!
Stands come in all different shapes and sizes and the right one will accommodate just about any weight. You can find them just about anywhere. The tall one pictured in the top photo is actually an artist's tabletop easel spray painted in a gold tone and will hold a large picture or object. You can also use cookbook stands to prop up a clock or round item (in addition to cookbooks).
Placing important things on a stand helps bring them to your attention. How about framing an invitation to a special event, a wine label from your favorite vineyard, a menu from a five star restaurant, a vintage postcard, a birth announcement, a meaningful newspaper article - hung on the wall they would just look flat, but propped up on a stand, they are a centerpiece. Try it with the first initial of your last name. You see decorative letters in catalogs everywhere, but leaning it on a stand will give it great shadows and will put your personal touch on a common thing.
If you are propping up plates, try doing it in an unusual way - double or triple them up. Make it interesting!
Give it a try! Create some interest on your shelves. Then give yourself props when people comment on how great it looks!
