As I was shopping the other day, I was noticing how much burlap is being shown in home decor lately. It is a fantastic color and has amazing texture. No wonder it is everywhere right now. Burlap is making a comeback and it's not because sack racing is the new exercising craze - it's making a comeback in home fashions because it adds instant warmth and coziness to sterile spaces. I have seen prints, decorative boxes, frames, mats inside of frames, place mats, table runners, lamp shades, you name it. I've seen it as curtains, upholstery and as table clothes.
I tied up a bundle with some jute twine and it would make a great gift wrap! Give it a try. Looks so cute. At the holidays, you could add a sprig of pine needles and a red bow!
Then, I got creative. I decided to combine the idea of the print with the inspirational words and the decorative box with shipping type words. I wanted some words that were personal to my family. I'm not really into the motivational crap, it's just not my thing. I started jotting down some ideas, but landed on our home address. I personally think everything looks cooler and sounds better in French, so I loosely/roughly translated my street address (I don't speak a lick of French, so it might be grammatically incorrect. I don't mind. The internet translator is to blame!). Here's how I did it.
First I covered a canvas with brown grocery bags. I crinkled them up and glued them on - just a little Elmer's school glue did the trick. Then I sprayed a little aerosol adhesive on the paper bags and wrapped the whole thing in the burlap. I flipped it over and used a staple gun to secure the burlap to the canvas frame. Next, I used blue painters tape to make straight guide lines. Finally, I stencilled the french translation of our street name on the burlap. Pretty cool! I layered it with an Eiffel Tower and a Paris picture. Then I tried it on it's side with some candle sticks.
I'm still playing around with it...I just haven't found the permanent place for it yet. One thing is certain: the folks at Easy Gardener were right. Burlap is easy to use. Who knew it would also makes for cool, personal artwork. Now, I've still got plenty of burlap left over. Wanna have a sack race?
